San Jose State beach volleyball took down the University of San Francisco 4-1 on Friday afternoon.
Although the score does not show it, the matches were closely played. Out of the five total matches played, three went to a third game.
The Spartans (6-1) flexed their clutch muscle by winning all three tie-breaking games against the Dons (0-5).
“A big focus for us this year is being able to thrive under pressure,” said assistant coach Delainey Gregory said. “We try to put our girls in uncomfortable positions in practice and have that aggressive mindset.”
SJSU won only one match in straight sets. Junior Ryann Thomison and senior Kiley Lingenfelter were the lone SJSU pair responsible for this feat.
“We just wanted to play for each other,” Thomison said. “We didn’t really focus on the other side even though they were giving us good stuff back.”
SJSU has now won two matches in a row and will look to continue the hot start tomorrow against Sacramento State at noon in Stockton, Calif.
