San Jose State’s men’s golf team dominated this week in the Stockton Pacific Invitational, finishing first out of 16 teams for three days in a row, leaving as tournament champions.
On the first day of the invitational, the Spartans made their mark, finishing first out of the 16 teams. The Spartans shot 6-under 282 with Long Beach State following shortly behind by four strokes.
The par being 72 seemed to be cake for the Spartans as they stayed under for most of the tournament.
Senior Sean Yu performed exceptionally well on the first day of the invitational. Yu has been shooting 66-or-better the past few rounds he has played in, and he carried the same momentum over into starting off the tournament.
Freshman Caleb Shetler also shined on day one of the invitational, tying for third and shot 3-under 69.
The Spartans did not struggle carrying the same energy into day two. Heading into the second day, the Spartans remained in first place and took advantage of their lead.
By the end of day two of the tournament, the Spartans as a whole, shot 7-under 281 which wasn’t too far off from their day one score.
Yu once again had an outstanding performance on the second day. He shot 3-under par following his 8-under par score Monday, and remained in first place individually following the first day.
As a whole, the Spartans are performing at an extremely competitive level. Three of their players are ranked in the top-25 spots in the leaderboard with Yu in first, junior Matt Heitel tied for 18th and Shetler tied for 23rd.
Both Heitel and Shetler shot well on the second day with Heitel tallying 68, and Shetler tallying at 69.
Consistency was key going into the third and final day. Having the advantage of a first place standing was not undermined by the Spartans.
Ending the tournament, the Spartans shot collectively at a 16-under 848, and left the tournament with an individual championship for senior Sean Yu.
Yu shot an 11-under 205 for the tournament and remained the most successful and consistent player for SJSU.
SJSU also holds one player in the top 10 following this tournament. Shelter ended the tournament with a seventh place after moving up from 23rd.
The Spartans have been competing well so far, finishing in third place or better in three of their four fall tournaments.
SJSU golf went out with a bang and has a nice break as it will return at the start of the new year.
