Weber with three-goals, but drop its first Golden Coast Conference game

San Jose men’s water polo dropped its first Golden Coast Conference game to Cal State University, Long Beach on Saturday afternoon.  

CSULB (10-8, 1-0 GCC) started out the first period with a goal from junior center Quinten Osborne a minute and a half into play. 

Freshman attacker Rafael Real Vergara ended the period with another Sharks goal on an even strength play. 

SJSU (3-11, 0-1 GCC) remained scoreless in the first period. 

Coming in on a mission, senior driver Marc Weber successfully hit the back of CSULB net with assistance by sophomore attacker Neil Arnett. 

Senior utility player Giacomo Lovatelli scored one for the Spartans.

With one minute left into play, senior 2-meter defender Finn Pardon helped put SJSU up on the scoreboard ending the second period one goal behind CSULB, 4-3.

SJSU opened up the third period with a goal scored by sophomore driver Adam Bado to tie up the game, 4-4.

Sharks sophomore utility player Matt Morris faced an exclusion that let Weber to draw a penalty shot where he victoriously shot passed the goalie leading the Spartans, 5-4. 

CSULB went on to score two more goals extending their lead 7-5 to end the third period. 

Opening up the fourth period, Real Vergara went on to score two more goals for the Sharks. 

Weber returned putting up the last and final goal for the Spartans but it was not enough and CSULB ended the game, 10-6.

Although, SJSU led with 27 shots on goal compared to CSULB’s 24, goalies Marwan Darwish and Andrej Bosanac collectively denied 10 Spartan goals total. 

Up next, SJSU head to to UC Irvine for a 12 p.m. game at the Anteater Aquatics Complex on Sunday.
