The Spartans women’s volleyball (5-9, 0-3 MW) failed to hold on to a 2-0 set lead on the road, falling in five sets to Utah State (1-14, 1-2 MW) Thursday.
The first two sets were similar for the Spartans, as they began each one facing deficits.
In the first set, they faced a 19-13 gap, but raced back to tie it up at 22-22. They ended up winning the set 25-23.
In the next set, SJSU held on in the face of the aforementioned deficit but pulled it back to within striking distance as the set went on.
The Spartans continued to creep behind the Aggies until tying it up 25-25.
Extra time was a dogfight for both sides, and the Spartans would come out with a 28-26 set victory.
Down to their last set, the Aggies would not go down without a fight.
Just like the sets before, the trailing team kept it close, but Utah State would pull away for the 25-21 victory.
SJSU nearly put the Aggies away in the fourth set, overcoming another early deficit to lead 23-21. But, a furious comeback the other way would conclude the set in Utah State’s favor, 26-24.
The final set was close to the finish, with teams switching sides as Utah State scored to make it 8-7 in their favor.
They would outlast the Spartans, slaying them 15-13 to earn their first win of the season.
The error bug hit the teams just as frequently as the comebacks did. The Spartans committed 56 errors on the night for a hitting percentage of only 9.5, led by freshman Makayla Lewis’ 16 errors.
With the loss, SJSU drops to 5-9 on the season. They’ve yet to win in conference play and are in the midst of a four-game losing streak overall.
The Spartans’ next game will be on the road at Boise State on Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.
