Sputtering San Jose State offense fails to capitalize against Boise State

San Jose State women’s soccer team (3-6-2, 1-2-0 MW) fell 1-0 to the conference leading Boise State (11-1, 3-0 MW) Thursday night after being outshot most of the game.

The Broncos brought a physical style of play and San Jose State couldn’t keep up with the Broncos, despite a valiant performance by sophomore goalkeeper Ariana Romero.

The Lady Spartans were only able to muster four shots on net the entire game compared to the Broncos dominating 13 shots.

This was an underwhelming performance for a team desperate to return to championship form.

San Jose State had zero shots before senior defender Kristen Amarikwa almost put the Spartans up 1-0 early in the second half.

The Broncos have had their way with opponents this season, riding a six game winning streak heading into Thursday’s match.

Boise State is dominating this season in shots on goal, shutouts and goals per game.

The Broncos are led by the Mountain West Conference’s top scorer, Raimee Sherle, the lone scorer of the match.

The Spartan’s backline managed to contain Sherle for most of the game until a late 75thminute goal slid past Romero in the second half.

Despite both teams making the most of their substitutions, Boise State’s physicality combined with Sherle’s ability to find the back of the net proved too much for SJSU.

San Jose State will look to rebound against Utah State on Sunday, set for an early 11 a.m. start.
