Men’s soccer held scoreless by Dons

San Jose State men’s soccer (0-5) went down silently in the city Thursday night as they were shut out by the University of San Francisco (1-3) 3-0.

In the 28th minute of the first half, Fremont native Ashish Chattha would score his first of two goals. This was also USF’s first goal of the season after conceding 15 goals in the last three games.

The second goal came just 15 seconds into the second half.

USF’s third goal came with just three minutes left in the game, capitalizing on the Spartans’ fatigue.

However, the score did not reflect the Spartans’ play. SJSU was outshot 8-4 in the first half, but outshot USF 8-6 in the second half.

“The half I say we played quite well,” SJSU head coach Simon Tobin said as he came late due to illness. “Obviously you want to win every game, but we need to make sure that we’re right and there’s still some things that are not good enough for that.”

Last season, the Spartans were able to beat the Dons 4-1 at home.

“We still have to tighten up in certain areas,” said Tobin. “But we have a little bit of a break now, so we don’t play again for another nine days so will help me feel a little better and I think they’ll be fine.”

The Dons were aggressive throughout, even receiving six yellow cards, and were able to pull out their first win of the season.

SJSU will look ahead as they have two more non-conference games before playing CSU Bakersfield.

The Spartans will take on the Aggies of UC Davis at home on Saturday September 21. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
