San Jose State men’s golf traveled to Arizona to compete against all of its conference opponents in the Mountain West Championship and finished in ninth place.
The championship consisted of three days, but as a team, the Spartans had a rough go-around each day.
The team had started out strong in the first nine holes of the tournament with a seven-under par start. At that point, only the University of New Mexico had a better score.
However, the second half of the course was a different story as a bogey-overwhelmed SJSU shot a 290 to end the first round at Omni Tucson National golf course in 10th place.
Sophomore Bryce Wortman was the lone bright spot SJSU as he finished the day one-under par.
Starting Day 2 four strokes ahead of last place, SJSU gained a spot in the standings in large part thanks to senior Kevin Velo’s phenomenal performance.
Velo shot a 66 on the 72-par course without a single bogey, while his six birdies were split between the front and back nine.
Senior Ben Campbell and sophomore Matt Heitel contributed on the second day as they shot par and one-under par.
Round three didn’t prove to be any better for the Spartans as they tallied 293, their highest of the tournament.
Velo and Wortman both shot par and SJSU was able to keep its placing in ninth.
UNM took the championship, three strokes better than second-place finisher Colorado State.
It hasn’t been too bad of a season for the SJSU golf team, but as shown this weekend, it has had a hard time competing with conference competitors.
