San Jose State women’s tennis (7-6, 0-1 MW) had its first Mountain West match against San Diego State Aztecs (11-7, 2-0 MW) but was defeated 4-1 on Friday afternoon at Spartan Tennis Complex.
Despite rainy weather delaying the match by four hours, the Spartans showed up for the doubles pairs and got on the scoreboard quickly.
Freshman Alba Pedrero Galindo and senior Miyo Kobayashi won their match 6-3 against SDSU pairings junior Mia Smith and senior Magda Aubets.
Fighting hard during their set, sophomores Savannah Sendar and Laura Malsert dropped their match 6-1 to San Diego State sophomore Nnena Nadozie and freshman Alicia Melosch.
In a tight set, senior Tamara Culibrk and sophomore Klara Milojkovic were in a tiebreaker against SDSU freshman Shakhnoza Khatamova and senior Jenny Moinard and came on top to win it 7-6.
For singles matches, Kobayashi was won her first set 6-3 against her opponent Khatamova and dropped her second set 6-3.
Malsert was unable to defend the court falling short 7-5, 6-1 to Melosch who earned a point for the Aztecs.
Pedrero Galindo battled heavily against Nadozie but was defeated 6-1, 6-4 to which another point was awarded to SDSU.
San Diego was able to win two more points for their team, ultimately winning the matchup for the evening.
For the upcoming match, Kobayashi has a plan on how she is going to improve on her skills to help gain a win for the Spartans.
“I just need to be confident and be comfortable with what I do,” Kobayashi said. “I need to stay on track with what I’m supposed to do in terms of my form, my serve’s and I need to pick a spot instead of being crazy everywhere on the court, I just need to stay strong mentally.”
The Spartans return to home court on Sunday for a 12 p.m. match against the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
