San Jose State softball (9-5) will travel to San Diego and compete in the San Diego Classic for its third tournament of the 2019 season.
The Spartans are scheduled to play in five games over the course of the tournament.
They will start with a doubleheader on Friday against Brigham Young University (6-7) and Long Beach State University (6-8).
BYU will be a team to watch as it’s coming off some huge wins against nationally ranked teams.
The Spartans will need to shut down the Cougars offense to clinch their first win of the tournament to provide them with momentum.
It will be crucial for the Spartans to limit errors and be effective on the mound when facing LBSU.
Senior Jamie Wren has come in clutch for the Beach offense with 20 RBIs and four homers. She will be a challenge for the Spartans defensively.
On Saturday, SJSU will take on Florida Gulf Coast University (7-6) and Weber State University (3-7).
The Spartans will need to contain Eagles’ junior Sammi Poehlman. She has an team-high .360 batting average.
SJSU need to capitalize on a weak Weber State team as it’s on a four-game losing streak.
The matchup between the Spartans and the Wildcats will be the fifth between the two programs. The all-time series is currently tied 2-2 and SJSU will look to win the tiebreaker.
To close out the tournament, the Spartans are slated to face the host of the tournament — University of San Diego (5-9).
The Spartans red-hot bats will look to hit off freshman pitcher Madison Earnshaw, who posts a 2-5 record on the mound with 6.36 ERA in seven starts.
It would be essential for them to take advantage of their opportunities at the plate against the Toreros.
SJSU is coming off of a hot performance at the Silicon Valley Classic . It came out of the tournament with a clean sweep and are looking to do it again in the San Diego Classic.
The Spartans will seek to keep shining on the pitching mound.
Freshman pitcher Jenessa Ullegue has posted a 3-1 record with 23 strikeouts and nine walks. The opposing hitters are only hitting .198 off her.
The first pitch against BYU will be at 9 a.m.
