San Jose State softball started the first day of the Troy Cox Classic with a 6-5 victory over the University of Montana Grizzlies but lost the momentum against the Texas State University Bobcats when it fell 12-3.
SJSU (4-4) managed to get a one point win over the University of Montana (1-6) even though they had a strong come back in the last three innings.
Senior Madison Aurin finished out the scoring by hitting a homerun in the fourth and a double in the sixth bringing in junior Cassidy Clark for the sixth run of the game.
It took the Grizzlies a long time to warm up as they were scoreless for the first four innings. From there they were able to put up five runs, but it was not enough to even out the score, so the Spartans didn’t even need to get their last at bat.
Sophomore Caroline Bowman and freshman Jenessa Ullegue split the mound in the first matchup. Bowman gave up three runs in the first five innings and Ullegue finished the game allowing two runs.
It was a much different story for the second game of the day against Texas State. The Bobcats (3-2) scored in the first inning and kept the Spartans at zero while they hit two homeruns in the second.
The Bobcats were just on fire offensively and defensively. The first run made by the Spartans was due to a fielding error, but that was enough to get them on the board.
SJSU only managed to score three runs while TSU put up at least one run in each inning.
The Spartans simply proved to be tired in its second game. The team went through three pitchers and still managed to give up 12 runs.
The Spartans have two games tomorrow as well and they will need to be on their “A” game for the entire day if they want to win both matches.
The first game tomorrow is against New Mexico State at 3 p.m. and the contest against Bradley University starts shortly after at 5 p.m.
