Women’s soccer seeks first win in clash of the Titans

Coming off a scoreless draw against Kansas State, San Jose State women’s soccer will search for its first win of the 2018 season against Cal State Fullerton.

The Spartans (0-2-2) look to capitalize at home in their fifth-overall meeting against the Titans (2-3-1).

CSF leads the all-time series 3-1-0 and defeated SJSU 1-0 in the last matchup in 2016.

It’ll be important for the Spartan defense to silence an intimidating Titans squad.

Entering Thursday’s game, the Titan offense has scored nine goals and has averaged 12.2 shots per game in six contests.

Goalkeeper Paige Simoneau has been dominant in the net all season, and will look to keep the momentum rolling.

The senior had an impressive six-save shutout performance against the Wildcats last week, which led to Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week honors. Overall, she posts a .842 save percentage and 16 saves in four games.

The Spartans will also look to find an offensive rhythm against another elite goalkeeper in Tianna Sanders. The CSF sophomore has a .758 save percentage and 25 saves in six games.

As a team, SJSU has only scored two goals — both recorded by junior forward Jamilecxth Becerra.

In order to get past Sanders and the Titans, the Spartans need to apply the pressure early and have it remain intact throughout the entire game.

Kick off is set for 7 p.m. at Spartan Soccer Field.
