Spartans fall in final non-conference game

San Jose State baseball outhit Saint Mary’s College, but couldn’t plate enough runners in its 7-3 non-conference loss.

The Spartans (23-28, 13-14 MW) dropped their second game of the season to the Gaels (31-20, 14-10 WCC) and went 2-6 against West Coast Conference opponents all season.

Sophomore right hander Josh Zanger took the mound for the Spartans and gave up only one run over two innings pitched, but received the loss.

SMC got on the board in the bottom of the first after a sacrifice fly.

Two innings later, the Gaels scored four runs. Back-to-back leadoff walks and a throwing error started the scoring rally.

Spartan freshman right hander Walker Brinkman failed to record an out and gave up two earned runs before he was relieved by senior right hander Cameron Keup. The senior pitched two scoreless frames while only giving up one hit.

The Spartans were held hitless through 3.1 innings and could not score a run until the fifth inning. After a leadoff double, SJSU freshman first baseman Ruben Ibarra singled in a run.

In the bottom of the same inning, a wild pitch brought in another run for the Gaels to make the score 6-1.

With the bases loaded in the sixth, sophomore left fielder Anders Davidson singled and plated two runs for SJSU.

Although the Spartans tried to comeback from the five run deficit, they allowed a single run in the eighth inning to solidify a 7-3 loss.

SJSU will travel back home for an important three-game series against Air Force to cap off the season. The series starts Thursday at 7 p.m.
