Everything was going right for San Jose State softball as they shutout UC San Diego in a 7-0 victory.

This marks their second victory this season and back-to-back wins in the Silicon Valley Classic.

The Spartans started off strong in the first inning as junior infielder Reina Zermeno opened the scoring. That would be followed by junior infielder Ahmiya Noriega with 2 RBIs and another run.

The Spartans would not score until the fourth inning when sophomore outfielder Carly Cummings would get a run. There would be another cold streak in scoring until the 7th inning when Zermeno hit her first home run of the year to make it 7-0.

“It’s a great feeling especially coming off of last weekend,” Zermeno said. “Seeing everyone happy, it’s a good thing.”

While the Spartans offense was great, their defense was arguably better. They didn’t let UC San Diego score once throughout the game and one of the most important parts of that strong defense was senior pitcher Lacie Ham’s performance.

Ham had nine strikeouts this game which completely shut down any kind of offense for the Tritons.

“I haven’t really done that since my sophomore year,” Ham said. “Going into my senior year, (I’m) just trying to push it really hard.”

The Spartans will have a doubleheader on Feb. 15 against Cal Poly at home and head coach Tammy Lohmann is hoping to keep this momentum going.

“We worked hard, and they’re seeing what they’ve worked hard at,” Lohmann said. “Really proud of their efforts this week and continue to pitch and play and play solid defense.”
