After a rough first round, San Jose State women’s golf revived its tournament back with a strong second and third round.
Through the first round, the Spartans struggled hitting a combined 302 strokes. They were two spots ahead of last place early on.
However, reducing them by 14 in the next round, then by one on the final day would move them up five spots to share ninth place with Pepperdine University.
Senior Lucia Lopez Ortega paved the way, hitting even at par through three rounds. She finished with a strong final round, hitting a -2.
Tying for eighth place out of 80 golfers, she was the focal point towards the Spartans revival. The next golfer behind her was sophomore Moa Anderson, who was tied for 45th place.
Despite starting off six over par, Anderson finished strong in the final two rounds, hitting a +2 to cap off her tournament.
Recovery was focal behind San Jose State’s campaign in this tournament. With multiple players struggling during the first day, the group did a great job responding and finishing strong.
“We’re encouraged by how we did the last couple of days,” head coach Dana Dormann said. “We’re looking forward to playing next week.”
SJSU’s next stop is the Alice and John Wallace Women’s Golf Classic on Feb. 15-17 at the Monterey Country Club in Palm Desert, Cali.
