San Jose State men’s soccer (3-7-6, WAC 2-3-2) lost 4-1 to Seattle (8-4-3, WAC 5-1-1) in its first home defeat of the season on Saturday at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
The Redhawks started the scoring in the first half after a goal from forward Titus Washington in the 25th minute.
The Spartans quickly retaliated in the 34th minute after a goal from their leading scorer junior Angel Iniguez, recording his seventh of the season.
Following the loss, Iniguez only has one goal in mind to end the season.
“I think just be able to bounce back from the losses and keep moving forward,” Iniguez said. “Don’t let it affect us and try to make the WAC tournament with these two games coming up.”
Things took a turn for the worse as the Spartans gave up three second half goals including a second goal from Washington to record his eighth goal of the season.
With the win Saturday, Seattle clinched a spot in the WAC tournament as now two spots have been claimed including a spot from San Diego State.
San Jose is now on a three game losing streak and will have to loom for their offense to come alive after recording just six total shots in the game.
“First half was really good, I thought we played excellent,” head coach Simon Tobin said. “I knew this would be our toughest game, I think of the year probably apart from Stanford.”
The top six teams make the WAC tournament. The Spartans currently sit sixth in the conference and will need wins this coming week to secure a spot in the WAC tournament.
“We need to win two to get to the tournament,” Tobin said.
San Jose will end the regular season at home with two games remaining first against Grand Canyon University (5-7-3, WAC 2-3-10) with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m. on Thursday at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
