San Jose State men’s water polo ( 9-4,1-1 WCC) bounced back against Fresno Pacific (2-11) on the first day of the Julian Fraser Memorial after Thursday’s defeat against Fordham University.
The Spartans defeated the Sunbirds with a score of 16-7 at the Sullivan Aquatic Center in Santa Clara.
“Everybody got to play a good amount of minutes,” SJSU men’s water polo head coach Gabor Sarusi said. “A lot of our new guys scored goals which is exciting to see.”
The Spartans scored four goals in the first quarter to dominate the game from the get go. Senior Bence Szabo put SJSU on the board with an assist from senior Connor Macmillan within the first two minutes of the game to get the lead.
The Spartans offensive success continued with freshman Mattin Sarhaddi, sophomore Terence O’Donnell and freshman Samu Biros contributing three more goals with the defense only conceding one goal keeping the score 4-1 after one.
The Spartans continued their dominance,scoring three more goals in both the second and third quarter. The Spartans led 10-6 going into the fourth.
Junior Mateja Bosić had himself a day leading the Spartan’s with five goals in the match. He scored two and assisted three in the third and fourth quarter.
The Spartans would score six in the fourth quarter and increase their score to 16. The defense would shut down the Sunbirds offense and keep them to zero points in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Alexey Poletaev would be a key player to the Spartans defense having six saves and two steals in the game despite conceding six goals.
The Spartans improved to 10-4 this season and still 1-1 in conference. SJSU looks to take its momentum back home to host Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday Oct. 26 at 11:40 a.m. in San Jose.
