San Jose State softball (10-11, 1-1 MW) won 4-1 over New Mexico (8-22, 1-1 MW) Saturday afternoon getting its first conference win.

It got out to an early 1-0 lead after a fielding error from the Lobos scored junior Taylor Squires.

Sophomore Shay McDowell had another strong outing at the plate going 2 for 3 on the day while scoring two runs.

Junior Aubrie Thomas had a triple in the contest, her second of the weekend which scored a run for the Spartans.

“[Aubrie] is a fun athlete and she’s really getting in her stride,” head coach Tammy Lohmann said. “[Shay] is playing free and being her.”

Junior pitcher Mia Reynolds had a great day in the circle for the Spartans as she pitched seven innings for SJSU. Reynolds gave up just three hits while striking out five Lobo batters.

“I just had a different mindset in today’s game,” said Reynolds. “Getting ahead of every batter and trusting myself.”

“Tomorrow we’ll do the same thing and the great thing is that we’re at home and that gives us more opportunity,” Lohmann said.

San Jose will look to win the series against New Mexico Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
