The San Jose State men’s golf team finished in a tie for 12th place at the Amer Ari Invitational. The three-day tournament was hosted by the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
Although SJSU didn’t finish high in the tournament, the Spartans managed to improve their score every round with the final being their best.
The Spartans as a team shot 267 (-21) in round three, the lowest score they have ever achieved in an 18-hole round. At the end of the tournament, they finished 38-under par, which broke another team record for score over 54 holes.
A key contributor for the Spartans record-breaking tournament was senior Carl Corpus.
Starting off strong, Corpus shot 67 (-5) back-to-back for the first two rounds, leading SJSU after days one and two. Corpus followed up his early performance by shooting 64 (-8) with nine birdies on day three.
Spartan grad student Caleb Shetler was also a highlight player for the team. After a poor showing on day one, Shetler was able to settle in and shoot 66 (-6) in both of the final two rounds.
San Jose State head coach John Kennaday gave high praise to his team and its performance.
“Very excited about what I see progressing with this team and very proud of Carl, who finished second place against the strongest field that we’ve seen all year,” Kennaday said after the tournament concluded.
The Spartans look to further grow and develop when they compete in the Bandon Dunes Championship on March 10-12.
