San Jose State football’s newest batch of recruits won’t be the only new faces joining the team.
Head coach Brent Brennan announced Chip Viney as the new cornerback’s coach of the program. Brennan expressed his excitement Wednesday with the new hire after the announcement.
“Coach Viney has incredible energy. He’s got a really unique experience. He’s a California guy. He’s familiar with the state, this area and our conference,” Brennan said. I can’t wait for him to join us.”
Viney joins the Spartans’ coaching staff with nine years of experience studying and dissecting the defensive side of the ball.
His first coaching stint was as a defensive back’s coach for a local high school in his hometown of Fresno, Calif.
After one year of coaching at the high school level, Viney went on to the University of Oklahoma, where he spent eight years taking on various roles for the program including multiple analyst positions and one year as a director of player development.
Viney is no stranger to the Mountain West, as he spent the 2017 season serving as the University of Nevada cornerback’s coach.
Viney’s veteran knowledge and experience could help unlock the breakthrough potential that the Spartans’ defensive unit showed last season.
With this being the first major hire before fall camp and the regular season, it will be interesting to see what other changes or additions take place.
