San Jose State women’s water polo (6-3) went 2-2 in its Cal Cup opening weekend, losing against UC Davis and Cal and winning against Fresno State and Pacific.

In its first game of the weekend, the Spartans fought an evenly matched contest against the Aggies.

SJSU held the advantage in the first two periods leading 8-4, but faltered in the second half.

UC Davis made a comeback in the last minute tying 13-13 and pushing the game into overtime.

The Spartans lost the overtime period 2-1 and the game 14-13.

The loss may have affected SJSU’s performance in its next match later in the day against the Fresno State Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs chomped the ball in the first quarter leading 4-1 over the Spartans.

SJSU slowly trailed back onto the radar only to shoot its torpedoes by taking the lead for the rest of the game by the third quarter 6-5.

Freshman utility Lucy Miszewski shined this game, leading the Spartans in scoring by making four goals.

Fresno trailed SJSU slightly, trying to catch up by one point but the Spartans stalled long enough to end the period, taking the game 10-9.

On the second day of the Cal Cup weekend, SJSU rode the current against Pacific.

Much like the previous game the Spartans suffered in the first half going down 11-9.

But, also like the previous game, SJSU overtook the currents to tie the Tigers 13-13 and pushed them overtime.

Freshman utility Cila David made the deciding shot for the Spartans, heaving a final shot with 32 seconds remaining and winning the game 14-13.

SJSU played its final game of the weekend against the No. 3 Cal Bears.

The Bears plowed through the first half of the game with a seven-point lead over the Spartans 11-4.

SJSU played consistently by gathering three consecutive goals in the last three periods but it wasn’t enough to match up to the Bears.

The Spartans trailed Cal by seven points 17-10 losing the match and tying their Cal Cup weekend opening 2-2.

SJSU heads onto the road to Los Angeles to face off against four more opponents in the Cal Cup tournament starting with UCLA on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
