The San Jose State men’s golf team managed to finish in the top five out of 15 teams in the Wolfpack Classic that took place in Reno, Nevada on Monday and Tuesday. The tournament was played at Hidden Valley Country Club. The first round of the tournament was suspended on Monday due to darkness. It would resume on Tuesday afternoon.
The team shot a combined 16 over par, which was good for fifth place. The Spartans jumped up four spots on the leaderboard thanks to the 42 birdies they made during the two days.
Junior Carl Corpus was the top Spartan as he finished in eighth place with a score of one under par. His final round saw him shoot a 7-under par which which skyrocketd him 20 spots up the leaderboard.
Senior Vijay Srinivasan managed to break inside the top 20 of the leaderboard. The Fremont, Cali., native shot a final round 3-under 69. He finished at even par which put him in a tie for 11th place which is a career best.
Another Spartan who had a strong finish was junior Caleb Shetler. Shelter shot a final round 1-under 71. He finished at six over par which put him in a tie for 31st.
A highlight for the team came from sophomore Kristopher Stiles. He eagled the par-4 fourth hole which would be his lone highlight in Reno. He would finish in 75th place.
Freshman Nick Watts was able to shoot 11 over par which put him tied for 48th place.
New Mexico would go on to win the tournament with a combined team score of 14 under par. The individual tournament winner was New Mexico’s Albert Boneta, who finished at six under par.
The Spartans will play their next tournament on Oct.21. When they hit the road to Stockton to take part in a three day tournament with the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational.
