Track and field preview: Running on for the season opener

By Dan Nguyen — Reporter

San Jose State men’s and women’s track will be attending their first game for the Central California invitational against Fresno Pacific University on March 6.

It will be their first meet since Feb. 29, 2020 as games were canceled last year thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Spartans are looking to start fresh with this season opener as they placed in 7th for the Mountain West Championship last year.

Despite the 2020 season not ending well for SJSU, there are players to focus on for the 2021 roster.

Sophomore James Burbank opened the 2020 season with 14.10m in the triple jump at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitation and closed the season with a 7.28m in long jump at the Mountain West Championships.

Sophomore Sydney Bentley marked 56.21 in the 400 meter dash and 25.9 in the 200 at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitation.

Burbank and Bentley will be bringing their impressive skills for this year track and field.

This year the track and field team have fresh faces joining the team with seven freshmen on the men’s team and four on the women’s team. The Spartans also have junior transfers Jordan Finister, Senai Gerehiwet, and Daniela Salazar.

With new faces and returning players for the 2021 roster, SJSU will be eager to sprint to the finish for their start of the 2021 season in Fresno, California for the Central California Invitational this Saturday at 8 A.M.
