San Jose State softball swept its doubleheader against Ball State University and Univeristy of Northern Colorado Friday afternoon in the Silicon Valley Classic tournament.
The Spartans (7-5) shut out the Cardinals (8-5) 5-0 and earned a 3-1 win over the Bears (1-10).
Senior catcher Alyssa Avila got SJSU on the board first with a single through the right side. Arianna Miranda made it 2-0 Spartans as she scored junior outfielder Makayla Englestad.
In the fifth inning, the freshman right fielder hit a two-run homer and extended SJSU’s lead to 4-0.
“As soon as I hit the ball, it was gone,” Miranda said. “It hit the sweet spot, so I kind of knew.”
The offensive and defense performance went like a clockwork. Freshman pitcher Jenessa Ullegue only allowed only three hits in the 5-0 victory.
SJSU carried it momentum into the second game against UNC.
With hits from senior designated hitter Madison Aurin and freshman first baseman Carley Morfey, the Spartans were able to put up two runs in the first inning.
UNC was able to get a score in the second, but SJSU was able to retaliate with a run thanks to Englestad.
Sophomore pitcher Caroline Bowman allowed only one run in seven innings pitched.
“I’ve been really happy with them,” head coach Peter Turner said. “We are deeper in talent than last year.”
San Jose State will play University of Montana Saturday at 2 p.m. on the Spartan Softball Field.
