Tied until the ninth inning, San Jose State (9-5) lost 5-3 in the second game of a three-game series against The University of Utah (11-3).

San Jose and Utah were tied 2-2 in the fourth and each team scored once again in the fifth as the score remained 3-3 until the top of the ninth.

A ball call on sophomore closing pitcher Tyler Albanese, caused San Jose State to lose momentum and led to Utah scoring twice in the 9th inning to close out the game.

“We did get a good pitching performance today from EJ Mcgrew and David Thomas,” SJSU head coach Brad Sanfilippo said.

Only seven total hits off of the three pitchers today in the combined 9 innings played for the Spartans.

“I’ve just tried to keep everything the same that I have been doing because it’s working,” said EJ Mcgrew having only 2 hits in his 4 pitching innings today.

The Spartans offense was led by junior outfielder Jake Mccoy who had two RBIs and two hits.

“We have really been trying to find somebody for that clean up spot and he did awesome today,” Sanfillippo said.

Drew Giannini had a total of 12 pop outs today while on first base along with a hit and RBI at the plate today.
