San Jose State volleyball (6-0) keeps its undefeated record alive in a tight 3-2 victory over Santa Clara (4-4) Sunday afternoon at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara, Calif.
After a strong first set, the Spartans found themselves in danger of losing their first game of the season, losing the second and third sets.
SJSU managed to get right back in it, as they made a statement with a solid 25-18 fourth set victory and completed the comeback with a 15-11 win in the final set.
A kill by sophomore outside hitter Nayeli Ti’a assisted by senior setter Brooke Slusser called game, a result for the majority of the game.
Ti’a led the team in both kills (14) and digs (12), while Slusser once again assisted 72% of the Spartans’ points with 39 assists.
This was the tightest match in SJSU’s young season and was a good test to determine whether the Spartans can overcome a deficit.
“We put ourselves in a hole, and dug ourselves out of it,” SJSU head coach Todd Kress said. “And we started playing better volleyball and I think that shows a lot of character and growth for this team.”
After playing all six of their matches on the road, the Spartans will open up their first home game of the season against University of San Francisco. The home opener is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday at Spartan Gym.
