Men’s soccer preview: SJSU travels to Seattle for regular season finale

By Jonathan Guzman — Reporter

The Spartans (9-5-3, 7-1-2 WAC) look to extend their unbeaten streak through their final game this season as they travel to Seattle, Wash. to face off against the Redhawks (11-7-0, 7-3-0 WAC).

SJSU is playing its best ball as it extended its unbeaten streak to nine games with its win over Houston Baptist. But no game thus far has meant as much as its next match.

This matchup is what some deem the match of the week as the Spartans and the Redhawks each have the opportunity to clinch the second seed and a bye week with a win. A bye week means that team will automatically advance to the semifinals in the 2021 WAC Men’s Soccer Tournament.

A win this weekend won’t be an easy task for SJSU as Seattle U leads the WAC in shots (262) and corner kicks (106). But SJSU does well against the attack as they are tied with Grand Canyon for most shutouts (6).

Seattle U owns the all-time series lead 10-6-4 with Seattle U beating SJSU last matchup at Championship Field in 2019.

A player to watch for the Redhawks is junior forward Declan McGlynn who is coming off WAC Offensive Player of the Week, for the period ending on Oct. 31.

A player to watch on the Spartans’ side is senior forward Rudi Castro who made the last game’s game-winning shot to help the Spartans stay unbeaten in the month of October. Castro is tied with senior midfielder Willy Miranda for the most goals on the season (5).

SJSU plays its game vs. Seattle U at Championship Field at 7 p.m Saturday.
