San Jose State women’s water polo ends the season with a devastating loss

The Spartans (2-14, 1-11 MPSF) lost to the Stanford Cardinal (10-4, 8-4 MPSF) 16-4 at the Avery Aquatics Stadium on Sunday.

No. 16 ranked SJSU suffered two losses to the No. 2 ranked Cardinal on the weekend in the final Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular-season matches for both teams.

The two scorers for the team were junior Olga Descalzi Portell and senior Tyanna Supreme. They made two goals each but that wasn’t enough to secure a win against the 16-goal-showcase from the Cardinal.

The defending national champion, Stanford Cardinal proved to be a strong opponent and the Spartans did not match its intensity.

Other notable performers:

Senior Lili Urvari had two steals Supreme, senior Sierra Painter, Portell and junior Sophie Spivack had one steal each.

Urvari pitched in with three assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Elaina Davey stopped two shots in the fourth quarter.

The Spartans tried hard to make it work but they looked too cautious and missed their chances against the aggressive Cardinal.

The team faces UCLA next in the MPSF Tournament on April 30 at 9 a.m.

The Spartans need a win to qualify for the next round of the tournament on May 1 and May 2.

A loss means May 1 will be their last match against the loser of the Stanford-Indiana matchup.
