San Jose State softball began the Judi Garman Classic by splitting a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount.
The Spartan offense struggled during the first game as it only had one hit. SJSU lost the game 3-0.
Senior and top pitcher Caroline Bowman pitched six innings while giving up nine hits and striking out three.
The SJSU offensive struggles were highlighted by a season-high 12 strikeouts for the game.
Junior pitcher Jenessa Ullegue got the start in the second game and was stellar.
Ullegue threw a complete game, giving up just one run. The junior was able to work through trouble throughout the game including the last inning when she allowed the first two hitters to reach base.
The power returned to the Spartan offense with two home runs by Seniors Janessa Lozano and Makayla Englestad.
Junior Alyssa Graham continued to be the Spartans’ best hitter for the season by adding another two hits. She also showed her ability to run the bases effectively. In the fourth inning, Graham led off with a bunt single and then advanced to second on a fielder’s choice.
Shortly after Graham advanced to third on a passed ball from LMU. In the same at-bat, she scored what ended up being the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
SJSU will continue the Judi Garman Classic tomorrow against Cal. State Fullerton in a doubleheader that starts at 4 p.m.
