WVB Preview: Spartans return home after month-long hiatus

By Annabelle Del Rosque — Reporter

Exactly a month later and San Jose State’s volleyball (1-5) is back on its hardwood.

After a devastating 3-2 loss against Fresno State, the Spartans are looking for reclamation as they will be hosting the University of Nevada (3-5).

The match will be tough for both teams and here’s why.

From the Fresno State match, there were two Spartans who collected 20 or more digs in a match for the first time since the 2017 season.

Junior middle blocker Haylee Nelson made a career-best with 21 digs and led the team for 15 kills and 53 attacks to put 17 points up on the board.

Besides Nelson is junior libero Sarah Smevog with 20 digs making this her third match of the season with 20 or more digs.

The previous holders of the 20+ digs in a match was Luiza Andrade (23) and Jamie Hirai (20) back in Nov. 2017 at home against Colorado State.

To toss it to the other side of the net, the Wolf Pack themselves will bring the heat.

Nevada’s sophomore middle blocker Sydney Petersen had a total of 20 kills and five errors to help lead her team to both wins against San Diego State.

For Nevada’s defensive side junior libero Kaila Spevak had a combined of 19 digs in the two matches against San Diego State.

The first of two matches will begin on Friday at 1 p.m. in Yosh Uchida Hall at San Jose State.
