The perfect time to golf

By Derrick Ow — Reporter

It was straight out of a horror movie.

Walking onto a golf course during a global health pandemic did not feel right. Golf courses throughout the state went back to business last week after shutting down due to COVID-19

I am used to smelling the fresh air and focusing on shooting a low score. But this time, I was focused on putting on a mask before I entered the pro shop to check in.

Despite the extra precautions, this is the perfect time to play golf. Yes, a rich man’s game that is slowly evolving into a game for everyone. Golf is the game that has given so much through scholarships and playing in national tournaments.

Sure, it is cool being the quarterback or being the point guard. However, being a golfer is a tough life. You cannot point the blame on a teammate for missing a shot. You cannot point the blame on a bad call made by the referee. In golf, it is all on you to hit great shots or bad ones.

This game can be frustrating both physically and mentally. Everybody who  gets the golf bug will not be Tiger Woods. It takes a lot of practice, patience and perseverance.

Golf is traditional from its Scottish roots. But, Americans are going out to the golf course in droves. According to the National Golf Foundation, 2.5 million Americans played on a golf course for the first time last year. Golf is a sport that will help you find a job or get you scholarship money.

Yes, we will always be a football nation. A nation that loves seeing grown men tackle each other and spike footballs like Rob Gronkowski. I love watching football like all of you do, but you cannot play the game forever unless you’re Tom Brady.

Golf is a game that can be played until you are 80 years old. Dr. Anthony Fauci will be proud that you are playing golf. You can easily observe social distance guidelines on the range, unlike in team sports like baseball.

While sports leagues around the world are looking to wish upon a star for their seasons to return, the PGA Tour will be returning next month in Fort Worth, Texas.

This is the perfect time to head out to your local golf course and start playing. Trust me, it is way better than an Instagram challenge or a TikTok video. You play outside and can observe local social distance guidelines.

So while we all wait for a light at the end of the tunnel, get some fresh air and have fun at the golf course. Do not forget to bring your mask.
