San Jose State men’s soccer starting goalkeeper David Sweeney was named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week after a phenomenal two-shutout weekend.
The freshman made a combined 15 saves over the weekend after a 3-0 win over Utah Valley and a 2-0 win over Air Force. In the game against the Wolverines, the Morgan Hill native stopped a penalty kick in the last minute of the game to keep the score 3-0.
After taking over Alex Clewis’ spot, who had a phenomenal senior season, Sweeney is making a bid for a better season.
He is the first Spartan to win defensive player of the week since Clewis did during the first week of last season.
“It is a well deserved recognition for the two clean sheets against top opposition,” head coach Simon Tobin told SJSU Athletics. “Although he’s only a freshman, David has demonstrated he is up to the task of anchoring our defense.”
With three shutout appearances under his belt, the goalie and his team will go on a three-game road trip to end the season before the WAC tournament.
