San Jose State women’s water polo was defeated Saturday 22-4 by the No.1 Stanford Cardinal in a final regular season Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matchup.
The Cardinal (19-1, 6-0 MPSF) jumped out to a one-goal lead 26 seconds into the first quarter by freshman 2-meter defender Chloe Harbilas.
The No. 20 Spartans (10-13, 2-4 MPSF) had freshman 2-meter defender Matilda Moore able to defend against the Cardinal and scored at even-strength with four minutes left to play.
Stanford continued shooting and was leading the team with six goals before the end of the first quarter.
Freshman utility player Olga Descalzi Portell had possession of the ball and tossed in a goal putting the Spartans up on the scoreboard.
Moore struck the net successfully on a power play assisted by sophomore driver Lili Urvari.
With one second left to play in the second quarter Stanford junior driver Mackenzie Fischer scored and was assisted by her sister, sophomore 2-meter defender Aria Fischer.
SJSU had over six turnovers throughout the game, giving Stanford numerous opportunities to steal the ball and score.
Unable to put in a goal, the Spartans fell behind the Cardinal with a 15-goal deficit by the end of the third quarter.
Strongly hitting the net, sophomore Natalie Hosmer helped the Spartans with their last and final goal of the game on a power play.
SJSU fell to Stanford, 22-4 to end its regular season.
This Cardinal win gave the team an undefeated for MPSF regular season since 2015.
The Spartans will return Friday to Stanford for the three-day MPSF Championship.
