San Jose State (15-32, 7-17 MW) softball dropped the second game of its series against Boise State (24-30, 10-14 MW) on Friday afternoon, falling 7–5 in a back-and-forth contest.

Junior pitcher Jordyn Fray, who earned the nod in the second game of the series, held the Broncos scoreless through the first two innings of the matchup.

The game turned in the third inning when Boise State erupted for five runs, capitalizing on a combination of hits and defensive miscues to take control.

Despite the setback, the Spartans continued to battle at the plate.

Senior utility player Reina Zermeno led the offensive effort with an impressive performance, recording both a double and a home run to keep SJSU within striking distance.

Zermeno has now hit 12 doubles on the season.

Boise State added insurance with two runs spread across the fifth and sixth innings, proving enough to hold off the Spartans’ comeback attempt and secure the 7–5 victory.

While the loss stings, SJSU showed resilience throughout, particularly in its ability to respond after the big third inning.

“We just gave them too many opportunities,” head coach Tammy Lohmann said, “we gave them extra bases that lead to runs.” (sjsu athletics)

The Spartans will look to tighten up defensively and limit big innings as they move forward in the series.

SJSU returns to action, staying on the road to face Boise State again in the series finale, on Sunday, May 3 at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Huber Field at Dona Larsen Field.
