With a record of 4-5, San Jose State women’s water polo is now on a three-game win streak after beating Santa Clara Broncos 21-6 Sunday.

At the end of the pool, senior Grace Smith had a total of eight saves holding the Broncos to one goal in the first half. The Spartans top scorer, sophomore Darcy Spark, had a five-goal game.

“I like to stay really calm and make sure as a team we are working hard and well together,” Spark said.

The Spartans came out of the gate strong with 11 blocks and 10 steals, overshadowing Santa Clara’s five blocks and three steals.

Even with the great win there’s still room for improvement, according to head coach Beth Harberts.

“We’re trying to force shots from certain positions in the pool, but things just develop quickly just with the swing of a pass,” Harberts said. “Improvement on team communication and recognition is vital.”

Harberts said the team is really focused on creating what they call ‘big bench energy’ because they need their teammates to lean on in those hard moments.

“It sends you into this kind of outside world where you can’t hear the crowd, only your teammates, and just makes it feel like you can do this,” senior Renee Fleming said.

Fleming scored a vital four points and had three assists for the Spartans.

The Spartans will face California at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Schaal Aquatics Center in hopes of their fourth consecutive win and outstanding start to the 2025 season.
