The San Jose State softball team (3-3, 0-0 MW) dropped a heartbreaker against BYU (6-1 0-0 WCC) on Thursday night, 8-5.

The game was tied 5-5 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That is when BYU catcher Mac Simmons launched a three run home run to left field off of SJSU freshman pitcher Lacie Ham.

Ham ended up with the loss with her final stat line being six innings pitched, eight hits, seven earned runs and six strikeouts. Her record is now 1-2 in the early part of the season.

The Cougars striked first in the bottom of the first inning. It was not until the fourth inning that the Spartans got on the board. Thanks to sophomore designated player Ashley Rico’s RBI single. The Spartans tacked on three more runs in the same inning.

After scoring one more run in the fifth inning thanks to junior left fielder Jillian Figueroa’s RBI single, the Spartans’ offense caught a cold and could not score a run. Figueroa was a key piece for the Spartans offense, going 2-4 with two RBIs and one run scored.

SJSU could not find an answer in the top of the seventh inning.
Senior second baseman Jessica Giacoma had a solid day at the plate. Going 2-2 with a triple, double, two walks and two runs scored.

Junior shortstop Jocylyn Vidal also swung the bat well on Thursday night. Vidal went 2-4 with an RBI.

The Spartans will look to right the ship Saturday against Seattle University in the Stanford Invitational.
