Spartans earn their second consecutive win, push to .500 on the season

San Jose State women’s soccer (2-2-0, 0-0-0 MW) earned its second consecutive victory defeating Southern Utah (1-4-0, 0-0-0 BSC).

The Spartans traveled to Cedar City, Utah to face off against Southern Utah University at Thunderbird Soccer Field Friday evening.

After losing their first two games of the 2021 season, the Spartans have beaten the Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara and the Thunderbirds.

Freshman defender Carly Burns capitalized on an early opportunity in the seventh minute by an assist from freshman midfielder Taylor Phillips to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

The Spartans would hold on to this advantage into halftime.

It would not be until the 73rd minute when the Spartans scored again to make it a 2-0 lead heading into the late minutes of the game, but the Thunderbirds would not go out without a fight.

The Spartans were shaky towards the end of the game with two of their players earning a yellow card after the 80-minute mark.

The Thunderbirds were able to get their first goal of the game in the 86th minute to cut the Spartan’s lead to 2-1.

The game would end 2-1 making this the Spartan’s second win of the season.

The Spartans outpaced the Thunderbirds with 14 shots on goal compared to their four.

But the Spartans also lead with eight fouls in today’s game.

The Spartans will be staying in Utah to battle Utah Valley University on Labor day at 11 p.m. PST.
