Miles would plop down at press row for a post-game interview with Allegri and was instantly reminded of how the victory was either the first of its kind or first in a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Months later, when the Spartans won their first-ever postseason game, Allegri joked, \u201cI\u2019m gonna start with the first \u2013 I know you hate it \u2013 but it\u2019s the first program victory in the postseason for San Jose State.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Hear from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoachMiles?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CoachMiles<\/a> on the postgame show with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JustinAllegri?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JustinAllegri<\/a> after today&#39;s win!<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AllSpartans?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AllSpartans<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RunToTheFight?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#RunToTheFight<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1ezxnu267C\">pic.twitter.com\/1ezxnu267C<\/a><\/p>&mdash; San Jose State Men\u2019s Basketball (@SanJoseStateMBB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SanJoseStateMBB\/status\/1637219495050727425?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 18, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And despite the season being long over with, Miles is once again reminded of another first:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2022-23 season marked the first time SJSU men\u2019s basketball, football and baseball made the postseason in the same year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With all three sports in the rearview, it\u2019s time to drive down memory lane.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sjsu-football-went-bowling\">SJSU football went bowling <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Head coach Brent Brennan pin-balled around a ring of raucous Spartans, grabbed a bean bag bowling ball and hurled it toward a set of pillowed pins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Strike.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">how do you feel because this is how we feel\ud83e\udd37<br><br>BOWL BOUND\ud83c\udfb3<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ClimbTheMountain?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ClimbTheMountain<\/a> |<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AllSpartans?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AllSpartans<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5iYXnYapWB\">pic.twitter.com\/5iYXnYapWB<\/a><\/p>&mdash; San Jos\u00e9 State Football (@SanJoseStateFB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SanJoseStateFB\/status\/1589142236222349313?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 6, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bowling party after SJSU football clinched <a href=\"https:\/\/thespearsjsu.com\/?p=16661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bowl eligibility with a win over Colorado State on Nov. 5, 2022<\/a>. This marked the first time SJSU secured bowl eligibility twice in the span of three years since 1986 and 1987 when the Spartans faced Eastern Michigan in back-to-back California Bowls.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History repeated itself again as SJSU faced Eastern Michigan in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in 2023. Reaching the bowl was the peak of the experience after <a href=\"https:\/\/thespearsjsu.com\/?p=16724\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Spartans were defeated handily in Boise, Idaho<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the loss, Brennan was emotionally raw. His misty red eyes revealing the sting of sending his deeply cherished senior class off in losing fashion.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Brent Brennan was teary-eyed and choked up following the loss:<br><br>\u201cThat\u2019s the hardest part about today we didn\u2019t send them [2018 class] out the way they deserved to be sent out.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2bR9Zu8Sia\">pic.twitter.com\/2bR9Zu8Sia<\/a><\/p>&mdash; The Spear (@TheSpearSJSU) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheSpearSJSU\/status\/1605367820723752961?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 21, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the ending should rest behind what that senior class accomplished.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senior bookend <a href=\"https:\/\/thespearsjsu.com\/?p=16416\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Junior Fehoko became the 2022 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year<\/a> and was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of this year\u2019s NFL Draft. Fehoko played a pivotal role in SJSU\u2019s surge from winning eight games in Brennan\u2019s first three years to becoming a Mountain West Champion in 2020.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fehoko was one of <a href=\"https:\/\/thespearsjsu.com\/?p=16416\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">11 Spartans who achieved All-Mountain West honors<\/a> and one of four Spartans who took home All-Mountain West First Team honors. Standing proudly alongside\u00a0fellow senior bookend <a href=\"https:\/\/sjsuspartans.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/cade-hall\/6299\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cade Hall<\/a>, senior linebacker <a href=\"https:\/\/sjsuspartans.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/kyle-harmon\/6301\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kyle Harmon<\/a> and graduate transfer wide receiver <a href=\"https:\/\/sjsuspartans.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/elijah-cooks\/6289\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elijah Cooks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quarterback <a href=\"https:\/\/sjsuspartans.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/chevan-cordeiro\/7012\">Chevan Cordeiro<\/a> made a seamless transition from conference foe Hawaii to SJSU. He tossed a conference-leading 3,251 yards and 23 passing touchdowns and rushed for an SJSU record nine touchdowns en route to All-Mountain West Second Team honors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sjsu-men-s-basketball-s-year-of-firsts\">SJSU men&#8217;s basketball&#8217;s year of firsts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the realm of SJSU men\u2019s basketball\u2019s firsts, the <a href=\"https:\/\/thespearsjsu.com\/?p=17377\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aforementioned Wyoming win<\/a> was pulverized by the pillars that the 2022-23 season now rests upon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Spartans snatched their first postseason victory in the <a href=\"https:\/\/thespearsjsu.com\/?p=18501\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">College Basketball Invitational (CBI) over Southern Indiana<\/a> and upset <a href=\"https:\/\/thespearsjsu.com\/?p=18279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nevada for its first Mountain West Tournament victory<\/a>. The pair of victories helped lift SJSU to its first time 20-win season in over four decades and the 21 total wins tied the program&#8217;s regular season record.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On an individual level, Miles became the first SJSU head coach to win the Mountain West Head Coach of the Year, while point guard <a href=\"https:\/\/sjsuspartans.com\/sports\/mens-basketball\/roster\/omari-moore\/6380\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Omari Moore<\/a> became the first Spartan to be named a Mountain West Player of the Year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"nl\" dir=\"ltr\">AHSHSJSJWOIWJSJKSKSKWIOWKSOSK<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/omari_moore13?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@omari_moore13<\/a> with the block for the win\u2755\u2755\u2755\u2755\u2755\u2755<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AllSpartans?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AllSpartans<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SCTop10?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SCTop10<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IWrYFmCLSZ\">pic.twitter.com\/IWrYFmCLSZ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; San Jose State Men\u2019s Basketball (@SanJoseStateMBB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SanJoseStateMBB\/status\/1632151866246336512?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 4, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miles and Moore helped shift SJSU\u2019s identity from Mountain West punching bag to a valid opponent in the ring. Collecting quad-one wins over conference foes Nevada, <a href=\"https:\/\/thespearsjsu.com\/?p=17940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boise State<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thespearsjsu.com\/?p=17519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Utah State<\/a> and finished with 10 conference wins \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/thespearsjsu.com\/?p=17651\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">their most since joining the Mountain West in 2013<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of this coming after SJSU won just one conference game a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miles, while being pursued by SJSU to become its next head coach in the spring of 2021, once quipped to Brennan on a FaceTime call, \u201cI&#8217;m starting to think they are going to call me Coach F.E.M.A., you know Federal Emergency Management. I only take over disasters.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before this year, SJSU\u2019s last winning season came over a decade ago and the Spartans\u2019 won double-figure games only once out of the last 11 seasons. Prior to Miles&#8217; disaster relief work beginning in 2021, the Spartans went 20-93 in four seasons under head coach Jean Prioleau.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moore, the only remaining player of the Prioleau era, rose from the ashes of defeat and became the face of SJSU\u2019s meteoric rise. Plus, senior reliever Jack White, who became an All-Mountain West First Team honoree after transferring from Michigan.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the 2023 season is remembered by those who\u2019ve languished alongside Sanfilippo in the land of \u2018Will we ever turn this thing around?\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief among them is sixth-year senior outfielder <a href=\"https:\/\/sjsuspartans.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/jack-colette\/6557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jack Colette<\/a>, fifth-year pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/sjsuspartans.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/jonathan-clark\/6556\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jonathan Clark<\/a>, fifth-year senior reliever <a href=\"https:\/\/sjsuspartans.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/darren-jansen\/6571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Darren Jansen<\/a>, fourth-year third baseman <a href=\"https:\/\/sjsuspartans.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/dalton-bowling\/6550\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dalton Bowling<\/a> and fourth-year outfielder <a href=\"https:\/\/sjsuspartans.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/robert-hamchuk\/6568\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robert Hamchuk<\/a>, who was named the 2023 Mountain West Tournament MVP.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jansen, after closing out SJSU\u2019s regular season title-clinching game said, \u201cWe love each other to death and we\u2019re all one big happy family.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From football to basketball to baseball, the 2022-23 season was a three-leg relay of rewritten history. An exercise that deserves acknowledgment and praise \u2013 <em>for now<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In reality, members of the 1981 basketball team, 1987 football team, or the 2002 baseball team likely never imagined it would take decades to reach those same heights.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For SJSU, success shouldn\u2019t just be a decade-to-decade phenomenon.
