Spartans see first bowl since 2015

With three possible Mountain West bowl games canceled, what does this mean for the Spartans? San Jose State football (6-0) is at the top of the Mountain West, followed by Boise State (5-1, 5-0 MW) and Nevada (6-2).

The Spartans will face off against Boise State on Saturday, for the highly anticipated Mountain West Championship Game hosted by SJSU at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.

The Mountain West is down three bowl games this year due to the pandemic. The Los Angeles Bowl will not be hosting its 2020 game, which would have been the first, neither will the Hawaii Bowl.

The Los Angeles Bowl replaced the Las Vegas Bowl in the Mountain West, meaning its top team would have faced a mid-range Pac-12 team. Unfortunately, it means missed playing experience and money for these teams.

ESPN announced Tuesday that the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl was also canceled.

Nevada will play against Tulane in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl and Hawai’i will face the University of Houston at the New Mexico Bowl, which was relocated to Frisco, Texas this year.

All that’s left for MW-specific bowls is the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl vs. MAC in Tuscon, Ariz. The Mountain West announced Monday that the winner of Saturday’s game will be in the Arizona bowl.

SJSU and Boise State are guaranteed to see a bowl this year. Mountain West confirmed on Sunday. The loser of Saturday’s game will play in another bowl, which has yet to be announced.

Projection if the Spartans win:

Arizona Bowl

San Jose State vs. Buffalo (5-0 MAC) in Tuscon, Ariz.

Projection if the Spartans lose:

Birmingham Bowl

San Jose State vs. UAB (5-3, 3-1 C-USA)  in Birmingham, Ala.
